From mining to multiple murders, our September talk will reveal the remarkable heritage of a small market town in Northumberland. You will discover Bedlington’s connection with Kings Cross station, the London Underground, the Stockton and Darlington railway, as well as railways in Italy and the Netherlands, a Tsar’s palace in Russia, Cleopatra’s Needle and the penny black stamp. Not to mention a 15th century pele tower and 4,000 year old burials!
Our Speaker
Our speaker, Barry Mead, originally from Leighton Buzzard and a passionate Luton Town fan, is an archaeologist, local historian and retired museum curator. He moved to the north-east in 1995 to manage Woodhorn Colliery Museum and church. Since ‘retirement’ in 2009, he has spent a lot of time fund raising to restore heritage sites in south-east Northumberland.
Our Venue
This talk will take place at St George’s United Reformed Church on Newton Road, High Heaton NE7 7HP. It is on the corner with Boundary Gardens, the same block as Heaton Stannington’s football ground, Grounsell Park.
There are excellent public transport links including the numbers 18, 38, 52 and 553, which stop right by the church.
There is car parking on the surrounding streets.
