South Shields born Eileen O’Shaughnessy is best known now for having been married to Eric Blair, aka George Orwell. But there was much more to her than that. She was an educated woman, an educational psychologist, and she joined her husband in Spain during the civil war, working in the office of John McNair of the Independent Labour Party. She is also thought to have been a strong influence on Orwell’s writing. Find out more about her tragically short life at our June talk.
Our Speaker
Angela Smith is Professor of Language and Culture at the University of Sunderland. She has published widely in the areas of media discourse and gender, and co-edits the Bloomsbury Library of Gender in Popular Culture. With Sunderland City Council, she runs the Rebel Women of Sunderland project which seeks to highlight the lives of the remarkable women who have a connection with the city.
Our Venue
This talk will take place at St George’s United Reformed Church on Newton Road, High Heaton NE7 7HP. It is on the corner with Boundary Gardens, the same block as Heaton Stannington’s football ground, Grounsell Park.
There are excellent public transport links including the numbers 18, 38, 52 and 553, which stop right by the church.
There is car parking on the surrounding streets.
