According to an information board outside Jesmond Dene’s Banqueting Hall, there used to be an organ inside, powered by water drawn from the pond in Paddy Freeman’s Park.

Intrigued, our speaker, John Telfer, set out to discover more, including how it worked, when it was in use and what happened to it.
Our Speaker
John has lived in High Heaton all his life. He attended Heaton Grammar School and studied physics and chemistry at King’s College, which was then part of Durham University.
John worked in the paint industry for over 50 years as a research chemist and latterly as a technical adviser. As well as being a longstanding member of Heaton History Group, he is a committee member of the Friends of Jesmond Dene and a volunteer with Urban Green. It is through these interests that John became interested in the history of Jesmond Dene, and specifically with Lord Armstrong’s association with the area.
Film
We have had to cancel our planned showing of the film ‘Gannin’ Along the Wall’, an informative and entertaining film about the route of Hadrian’s wall through Newcastle, because of technical issues. We are exploring showing it at a later date but in the meantime you can view it here. It’s a great watch!
Our Venue
This event will take place at St George’s United Reformed Church on Newton Road, High Heaton NE7 7HP. It is on the corner with Boundary Gardens, the same block as Heaton Stannington’s football ground, Grounsell Park.
There are excellent public transport links including the numbers 18, 38, 52 and 553, which stop right by the church.
There is car parking on the surrounding streets.
Booking There’s no need to book. Just turn up on the night.
