Dive into Durham

Wednesday 25 September 2024 7.30pm THERE IS NO NEED TO BOOK

Underwater archaeologist Gary Bankhead has been combing an area of the River Wear near Elvet Bridge in Durham since 2007. The remarkable collection of objects he has recovered is casting light on the lives of the many people who have crossed the river over some 800 years and challenging the way we view Durham’s past.

At our September talk, we’ll learn more about Gary’s work and his many finds, what they tell us about their makers and owners and the implications of his research for our historical understanding more generally.

Our Speaker

Gary Bankhead has been a sub-aqua diver for over 30 years and is an amateur underwater archaeologist. He is an Honorary Research Associate in the Department of Archaeology at Durham University and an external specialist for Museum of London Archaeology. He has made many TV appearances, most recently on ‘Digging for Britain’ (BBC2) and ‘River Hunters’ (Sky History).

Our Venue

This event will take place at St George’s United Reformed Church on Newton Road, High Heaton NE7 7HP. It is on the corner with Boundary Gardens, the same block as Heaton Stannington’s football ground, Grounsell Park.

There are excellent public transport links including the numbers 18, 38, 52 and 553, which stop right by the church.

There is car parking on the surrounding streets.

Booking

There’s no need to book. Just turn up on the night.
