Quakers in Newcastle

Wednesday 26 March 2025 7.30pm THERE IS NO NEED TO BOOK

The Religious Society of Friends was established by George Fox in 1652.  The movement spread very quickly and arrived in Tyneside only two years later. At first they were not welcome in Newcastle and so held their meetings in Gateshead. But by the end of the seventeenth century they were able to worship in Newcastle and built their first Meeting House on Pilgrim Street where they stayed until 1961 when they moved to Jesmond Road. In 2011 they moved again, this time to Gosforth.

Our March talk is about the members of the Society, the individual Quakers and their families, starting from the Tyzackes, Titterys and Holmes through to the Richardsons, Pumphreys and Hodgkins of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. These nineteenth century Quakers were very influential in the City as manufacturers, scientists and tradesmen as well as taking an active part in public concerns and campaigns. We then look at the modern Quakers of today.
