Wednesday 23 April 2025 7.30pm THERE’S NO NEED TO BOOK
Sir James Knott is a familiar name on Tyneside. The trust he founded has given millions of pounds to north-east charities and there is an iconic block of flats in Tynemouth named after him because they were built in the 1930s with funds from his trust. But what do you know about the man himself? Come to our April talk and find out about his background, how he made his money and what motivated him to give so much of it away.

Our Speaker
After retiring, Mike Coates helped North Tyneside Council in its Heritage Lottery Fund supported regeneration of Northumberland Park. This led to him joining a research group at the Old Low Light Heritage Centre on North Shields Fish Quay. Since then he has researched local history, given talks, written books and he is now president of Tynemouth Historical Society.
Our Venue
This event will take place at St George’s United Reformed Church on Newton Road, High Heaton NE7 7HP. It is on the corner with Boundary Gardens, the same block as Heaton Stannington’s football ground, Grounsell Park.
There are excellent public transport links including the numbers 18, 38, 52 and 553, which stop right by the church.
There is car parking on the surrounding streets.
Booking
The event is free to Heaton History Group members and costs £2.50 for non-members. There’s no need to book. Just turn up on the night.
