The Blacketts and 17C Tyneside

Wednesday 26 June 7.30pm THERE IS NO NEED TO BOOK

William Blackett’s rapid ascent from modest origins in Gateshead to great trading and mining wealth shines a light on the crucial role Tyneside played in the nation and northern Europe in the 1600s. Our June talk draws on the new research Greg Finch carried out to piece together the compelling story of the family’s rise, crisis and later business recovery in his recent award-winning book The Blacketts.

Our Speaker

Historian and author Dr Greg Finch lives in Northumberland and has researched, written and spoken widely on aspects of English history between the 16th and 20th centuries. His most recent book is The Making of the Hexhamshire Landscape. His 2022 book, ‘The Blacketts: a northern dynasty’s rise, crisis and redemption’ won the 2022 BAC Wadsworth prize, awarded by the Business Archives Council.

Our Venue

This event will take place at St George’s United Reformed Church on Newton Road, High Heaton NE7 7HP. It is on the corner with Boundary Gardens, the same block as Heaton Stannington’s football ground, Grounsell Park.

There are excellent public transport links including the numbers 18, 38, 52 and 553, which stop right by the church.

There is car parking on the surrounding streets.

Booking

There’s no need to book. Just turn up on the night.
