Jeff Brown will be a familiar face to most, having been a regular on the region’s TV screens for the best part of the past three decades. In a journalistic career spanning more than 40 years he covered sporting events around the world, from Test matches to Champions League football, Wembley cup finals and world title boxing bouts.

He began as a trainee at the Birmingham Post & Mail in 1982, returning to his native North East to be a sports reporter for The Journal in 1986. Ten years later he moved into television, joining Tyne Tees TV – where he worked alongside one of his heroes, legendary anchorman Mike Neville. In 2003 he moved to BBC Look North to become their regular sports presenter, and from 2008 he shared news reading duties with Carol Malia.
Jeff left the BBC in 2024 to pursue his playwriting and film-making interests. Both he and wife Susan are Deputy Lieutenants of Tyne & Wear, and Jeff has been nominated to be High Sheriff of the county in 2027.
Jeff’s talk for Heaton History Group will focus on his 40 years in television, especially covering sport.
