John Grundy’s History of Northumberland

Wednesday 24 April 2024 at 7.30pm PLEASE BOOK FOR THIS EVENT – LAST FEW PLACES

More than 10 years ago, a talk by John Grundy on ‘The Buildings of Heaton’ launched Heaton History Group. We’re very pleased to have him back in April for the start our 12th season. A lot has happened since then, not least that John has published a number of local history books. In this talk, he will reflect on his experience of writing the history of Northumberland, perhaps with some backward glances to the history of Newcastle that preceded it.

Our Speaker

John was born in Carlisle but, since 1970, he has lived in Newcastle. He was an English teacher for 40 years but managed to combine that career with his passion for the architecture and history of Northumberland a passion that was encouraged when his Auntie Bessie gave him a copy of Niklaus Pevsner ‘s ‘Cumberland and Westmorland’ on his 16th birthday. In the 1980s he left teaching for three years to become a fieldworker on the Re-survey of Listed Buildings in Northumberland and since then made many TV and radio programmes about north-eastern architecture. He was the co-writer of the 2nd edition of Pevsner’s ‘Northumberland’ and the author of ‘Northern Pride’, a survey of northern architecture. He is also a regular contributor to ‘The Northumbrian’ magazine.

‘John Grundy’s History of Newcastle on Tyne’ was published by Tyne Bridge publishing in 2016 and ‘John Grundy’s History of Northumberland’, his most recent publication, came out in 2022.

Our Venue

This event will take place at St George’s United Reformed Church on Newton Road, High Heaton NE7 7HP. It is on the corner with Boundary Gardens, the same block as Heaton Stannington’s football ground, Grounsell Park.
